Three Cranes Flying in a Misty Landscape (detail), 19th century

In Japanese culture, cranes have long been known as “the bird of happiness.” Cranes preen and—with seeming joy—dance to attract a mate. These elegant birds generally pair for life and can live for many decades, thus making the crane an auspicious motif for a wedding or for household decoration. Their portrayal in art often symbolizes fidelity, prosperity, good health, peace, and longevity.
